About Us

THIOSSANE ( cho-san) meaning HERITAGE in Wolof, the primary indigenous language of West African people of Senegal. The research and artifacts compiled for this website and campus display in the G-building initially began in Spring 2011 by Honors students of the black studies department at San Diego Mesa College. Since then the honors STEM cohort of 2013 has brought our vision to fruition by enlightening  students  about the contributions of the African Diaspora to the 21st century fields of Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM).

This on-going experiential learning Effort has two objectives:

1) to expose all students to the hidden contributions of ancient and modern African centered scholarship, epistemologies and experiences that have shaped STEM fields across the globe, and 2) to increase and maintain underrepresented students interests in STEM Careers as a result of this effort.
